Description
1801 1ed Virey Natural History of Man Monkeys pre-Darwin EVOLUTION Illustrated
Julien-Joseph Virey was an early 19th-century French anthropologist known for his work of natural history Natural History of Man. First printed in 1801, this work was an important work in establishing and reinforcing various theories of evolution, particularly the theory of polygeny, evolution from various forms of ancestors. While Virey did compose other works, none were more important or influential as this. According to the DSB,
“Considerable effort and erudition went into his Natural History of Man, a work typical of early 19th-century anthropology in its generalizations on types of man, customs, religions, psychology, language, infancy, women, and social organizations.”
In this work, Virey shows his fascination with the human race; however, he does so by distinguishing it from other species, such as monkeys. He studies the influence of monkeys and their evolutionary development on humans. This fine first edition is filled with full-page engravings of monkeys, humans, and characteristics of each.
