Description
Eight Letters Provost Marshall, Fort Barrancas, 1863. This group of letters are believed to have been written by the Provost Marshall of Fort Barrancas, Florida in 1863. Most of the letters are written of Office of Provost Marshal stationary, Pensacola, Florida, 1863. Pensacola has been marked out and Barrancas is written above. (1) Letter January 26th, 1863 speaks of mailing a Confederate uniform to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in a box. (1) January 20th, 1863, speaks of an order for General Davis to report to General Sherman at Vicksburg. Meanwhile, Colonel Dyer is in command of "this place." Also pertains war news and correspondence to wife. (1) April 2nd, 1863, correspondence with wife. correspondence with wife. In this letter, he is inviting his wife to come visit or stay in Florida. The letter also mentions the guns of Fort Pickens. (1) March 17th, 1863, speaks of Union commanders, and war contraband of a sewing machine and china that he was sending home to his family. (1) February 1st, 1863, speaks of letters from home received from a steamer that were mailed December 30th. Also speaks of an aide, different people approaching the Fort under a flag of truce, goods being shipped north by the steamer "Bio Bio," Captain Pierce, naval yard, homemade bowie he was sending home, and Confederate Uniform that was sent home that had came from General Bragg Army in Tennessee. (1) March 17th, 1863, speaks of receiving an order from General Banks, navy yard, and orders to Baton Rouge. At this time he was the Pensacola Naval Yard. (1) January 18th, 1863, letter to wife. (1) March 23rd, 1863, states that the city of Pensacola is used up and two-thirds of it is ashes. The letter claims, "There are only ten families left in Pensacola and but one negro." Also speaks of a Lieutenant Prescott and other things to his wife. From the Estate of Dr. Ronald Terhune.
