Description
Group of Civil War Soldiers' Letters. (1) Letter from a doctor in charge of a Union Hospital on Matagorda Island, Texas, Jan. 16, 1863. The letter states he was the medical director of U.S. forces on the island. It states the hospital is under construction by one company of Pioneers stationed there. When finished the hospital should house 90 patients. They had five regiments, one battery of heavy artillery, and one company of Pioneers. The letter also mentions the 15th Maine. (1) Letter speaking of being camped near Washington, Virginia, May 15th, 1865 and coming home from war. It also mentions taking a doctor to go see his children. (1) 1863 letter to wife. (1) October 4th, 1863, hospital Buchanan's Corps to a Captain Shelby. States that a Dr. Hamilton is quite sick and concerns supplies. Signed by a Price Jennings. (21) Group of 21 letters written by Private Allen Quarmby, a native from Yorkshire, England, to his wife Jane. Allen first enlisted in Company K, 4th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out of the 4th, 21st July, 1861. In the fall of 1862, Allen re-enlisted in the 138th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. After the Battle of Gettysburg, Allen's regiment joined the Army of the Potomac in pursuit of Lee's army. He was wounded May 1863 during the Battle of the Wilderness. April 10th, 1865, he was discharged because of his wounds, (1) May 4th, 1861 letter speaks of 5,000 troops ready to march at a moment's warning, "The Valley boys are in high spirits." He mentions a Mayor Anderson, the Hero of Fort Sumter, being in camp. (1) May 23rd, 1863 on patriotic stationary. Letter says, "We put in a pretty idle time with it. We have a fiddle with us and some of the soldiers is dancing every night." The letter states that the Valley boys are ready to fight the enemy. "Address In Care of Captain Cook for Allen Quarmby, Norris City Rifles Co. K. 4th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers." (1) May 14th, 1861 Washington, letter speaks of miserable conditions, some of the troops are in the patent office and all other buildings that will hold them. "Yesterday I saw General Scott and the President. I was in the president's house half a hour. It is very beautiful dear Jane." The letter says they are close to the enemy, only needing to cross the river to meet them. (1) May 18th 1861 letter, states hospital is full of sick soldiers. Their group was getting a little more rations. "They could get their washing done five cents a shirt." Also mentions there are 40,000 soldiers there. (1) Washington, D.C., Camp Montgomery June 9th, 1861 letter states they have new uniforms and blankets. States they are located about two miles north of Washington and can see as far down the river as Alexandria, where brave Colonel Ellsworth was murdered while taking down the rebel flag. States they took possession of Perryville, Indianapolis. (1) Washington, D.C., June 5th, 1861 letter states they are being drilled "nearly to death." Allen says they have been eating six hard crackers with black coffee three times a day. At this point, they are three miles from Alexandria in a place called Camp Hale, about 50 yards from Fort Ellsworth. (1) July 1st, 1861 Camp Hale letter states drinking water is poor and they are preparing to march southward and fight to the last man. (1) August 24th, 1862 Camp Burton, Harrisburg, PA letter, mostly speaks of sick soldiers. (1) September 25th, 1862 letter, talks about cold nights, guarding the railroad, and receiving supplies. (1) Dorsey's Switch September 30th, 1862 letter, speaks about missing family, troops going to Washington and Harper's Ferry "very fast." (1) November 2, 1862 letter, speaks of being sick and camp life. (1) Dorsey's Switch October 24th, 1862 letter about camp life. (1) Dorsey's Switch October 20th, 1862 letter, speaks of camp life with five men to a tent and getting new guns. (1) Dorsey's Switch, Maryland February 28th, 1863 letter, concerns camp life, pay, and a three feet snow. (1) March 16th, 1863 letter, camp life with snow. (1) Dorsey's Switch, Maryland, March 26th, 1863 letter, snow, camp life, General Bridges coming to inspect. (1) Dorsey's Switch, April 14th, 1863 letter, camp life, general inspection, Lieutenant Colonel gave them a favorable report. (1) Headquarters, Belaz House, Maryland, date? letter, they marched five miles to camp. (1) Date unknown letter, "War will be over soon. The rebels have been greatly weakened. Vicksburg has been captured and the rebels have been defeated at Gettysburg and Port Hudson. Indeed the news is glorious." (1) On Picket Duty, Monday, September 15th letter, tells wife not to be afraid of Stonewall Jackson, "he will be caught in his own snare. General McClelland and Burnside had a fight with him on Thursday and whipped him, according to report." Allen and his unit are guarding railroad and telegraph. (1) January 30th, 1863 Dorsey's Switch letter to wife about camp life. From the Estate of Dr. Ronald Terhune.
