Central America, Guatemala or Mexico, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A hand-carved and painted wood mask depicting the face of a devil, capped with a lengthy pair of curling ram horn cores. The fierce visage displays vibrant green and metallic hues in bold patterns ? note the orange snake twining over the brow! Colorful masks like this example have long been used in La Diablada or Danza de los Diablos (Dance of the Devils)- dance dramas that entertain and amuse the spectators, while also serving as Catholic morality plays. Size: 16" L x 8" W (40.6 cm x 20.3 cm)
Provenance: private Goldstein collection, Denver, Colorado, USA. The Goldsteins have amassed their collection over the past six decades.
