Description
Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wooden atlatl with walrus ivory pegs purportedly from the "Father Hubbard Collection, #272" which is written on the surface. Bernard R. Hubbard (1888 to 1962) also known as "The Glacier Priest" was a geologist, Jesuit priest, and explorer who led expeditions to study the volcanoes and later he gained an interest in the cultures of the Alaskan natives. Hubbard took extensive photos and film during his trips and brought back artifacts such as this atlatl. The atlatl is a spear throwing tool with a grooved wooden body and the ivory pegs helped anchor the spear butt before releasing. The verso has a label that reads "Eskimo Atlatls & Fish Spear."
