“Born in Gold Coast (Ghana); he became known as Kobina Bucknor. Educated at St Augustine’s College, Cape Coast and University College of the Gold Coast where he took a B.SC (Honours) in Zoology. In 1965 he was awarded a doctorate at Cornell University. After teaching he joined the staff of the Ghana Academy of Sciences and then returned to Cornell University; he went back to Ghana to work with the Animal Research Institute of which he was Director when he died.Although Kobina Bucknor was a notable animal scientist he will be remembered for his painting to which he devoted many hours, especially from 1966 when he held his first one-man exhibition in Accra, until his death at which time he was preparing work for a showing in West Germany. His art was inspired by traditional African sculpture. He was Chairman of the Arts Council of Ghana and carried out a number of official commissions.”
