Item Details
Description
Arthur J. Fitzsimmons (American, 1909-1992). Oil on board, ca. 1970s. Signed on lower right. A captivating painting by Southwest artist Arthur FitzSimmons featuring three cowboys on horseback traversing farmland with a small barn nestled under a leafy tree, all before a majestic mountain range in Taos, New Mexico. The painting is delineated with FitzSimmons' loose, neo-Impressionist brushwork, vibrant color palette, and impressive light effects. FitzSimmons spent much of his life painting in Taos as well as much of the Southwest, and his art - centering on the lives of cowboys in the American frontier - resonates with fans of the Western Romance genre. A wonderful painting set in an attractive rustic wood frame that complements the Western theme perfectly. Size of painting: 15.375" L x 19.375" W (39.1 cm x 49.2 cm) Size of frame: 19.125" L x 23.125" W (48.6 cm x 58.7 cm)

Arthur FitzSimmons studied with the first superintendent of schools of the Arizona Territory and also lived in Georgetown, Colorado as a teen. He later attended Washington University School of the Arts in St. Louis and studied under Fred Green Carpenter, Fred Conway, and Gustave Goetoch. Interestingly, FitzSimmons eventually taught at St. Louis University for thirteen years.

As his career progressed FitzSimmons gained positive critical reviews such as the following, "Arthur J. FitzSimmons' sincerity and sensitivity in painting his subject is one of the first things that a viewer perceives in his work. Rhythm of movement and bold color relationships make his canvases vibrate with the spirit of the Old West; a spirit he experienced as a boy. It is his individualism and independence of style that are earning him the reputation as one of the most important western artists." (Southwest Art, September 1973)

Accompanied by the former owner's ephemera - an artist biographical statement published for an exhibition as well as another brief artist biographical statement.

Condition
Painting is signed by the artist on the lower right and in very good condition overall. The frame has some surface wear commensurate with age, but the rustic wood complements the Western theme of the painting very nicely. The gallery paper on the verso has a few normal tears and has darkened with age. Frame is fitted with a suspension wire and is ready to display. There is a "Southwest Art" advertisement (April 1976) for FitzSimmons' exhibition at the Kachina Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Turkey Creek Galleries in Morrison, Colorado attached to gallery paper on the verso. This painting is also accompanied by the former owner's ephemera - an artist biographical statement published for an exhibition as well as another brief artist biographical statement.
