Revington Arthur American Connecticut Modernist artist oil painting signed, titled"The Ballet Class", Babcock Galleries label, 25 x30".
Revington Arthur was born in Glenbrook, Connecticut in 1908. He was an abstract painter, graphic artist, lecturer and art educator.Revington Arthur was the head of the Chautauqua Art Summer School from about 1956 to the early 1990's. He taught painting and drawing sessions as well as gave periodic exhibitions, lectures and speeches on art. His classes were well attended by both young and old. Some of the guest lecturers or speakers at Chautauqua were from the center of the arts/culture of New York City. He had a visit by NY Critic Robert Canaday as well as other major critics of the day to speak to the class.Dr. Karl (Carl) Menninger (the well known psychiatrist and author of the Human Mind, Man Against Himself and Love Against Hate was a frequent member at the summers sessions painting workshops. Numerous well known NYC artists also visited the Chautauqua sessions as well as those from across the country. He was a very good lecturer on the experience of American Art. He knew and studied art at the Art Students League and knew personally many of the early teachers who were members of the Ash Can School during the early 30's and 40's. He himself was a student of the Armenian Artist Ashile Gorky as well as other well known artists of the period when America Launched "Modernism." He was also a critic and one of the founders of the small works exhibition series in NYC. Studied: Art Students League; Grand Central School of Art, with George Luks, George P.
