Description
This is a letter signed by Robert Taft, responding to a letter by C, Dudley Armstrong, who also wrote letters here to Herbert Hoover, among other political notables. Senator Robert A. Taft (1889-1953), son of President William Howard Taft, represented Ohio in the United States Senate and became known as "Mr. Republican" for helping to rebuild his party after the Great Depression of the 1930's. When the 1946 election gave the Republicans control of the Senate, Taft chaired the Republican Policy Committee, where he helped plan his party's legislative agenda. He also chaired the Senate Labor and Public Welfare Committee and sponsored the Taft-Hartley Labor Act of 1947, which banned unfair union practices, outlawed closed shops, and authorized the President to seek a court injunction to impose an 80-day cooling-off period if a strike threatened the national interest, a very important tool for the President in dealing with unions that might have gone too far. Taft unsuccessfully sought the Presidential nomination several times, but was defeated by Republican rivals, and when Democratic President Harry Truman called Congress into extraordinary session in 1948, Taft blocked all legislative action, inadvertently contributing to Truman's successful reelection. The letter is written on a Senate letterhead, with Taft's name in the upper left hand- corner and signed in blue ink. The letter measures 10 1/2 x 8 in. wide and is in good condition, with light brown spots at the bottom edge, a couple of small creases at the tips, and a small tear about half way up on the right side, and none of them interfere with the text or signature. A great signature of an important Republican in the 1930's, 40's, and 50's. Size: 8 x 10 1/2 in. #1654
