Description
This is a folded letter signed by Herbert Hoover on his own personal letterhead. He is thanking someone for writing him a kind birthday note and for contributing to the Hoover Library at Stanford University. Hoover was a self-made man who became rich as a mining engineer, then he served as Secretary of Commerce from 1921 to 1928 and as the 31st President of the United States from 1929 to 1933. The letter is dated August 27, 1949 and was sent from the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, and it is signed "Herbert Hoover" in dark ink, and it is accompanied by the original letter from C. Dudley Armstrong wishing President Hoover happy birthday and telling him about his gift to the Hoover Library. (The Armstrong letter is not signed, but you can tell it came from C. Dudley Armstrong because of Armstrong's name being mentioned at the bottom of the letter signed by President Hoover.) The Hoover letter measures 10 1/2 x 7 1/4 in. wide and should be important to people at Stanford University and benefactors to the library. Size: 8 3/8 x 10 7/8 (largest). 10 1/2 x 7 1/4 (smaller). #1655
