Description
Herbert Hoover TLS Thanking Young West Virginia Boy for 60th Birthday Wishes

A 1p typed letter signed by former 31st President Herbert Hoover (1874-1934) as "Herbert Hoover" at center right. Dated August 7, 1934. On a single leaf of cream stationery with "Herbert Hoover" letterhead. Expected paper folds, with a minor split along the top horizontal fold discretely repaired verso, else near fine. 7.25" x 10.5." Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope embossed with Hoover's Stanford University return address verso, postmarked on August 10, 1934 and bearing a cancelled 3-cent violet George Washington stamp. Neatly letter-opened at top. Also comes with an Auction Letter of Authenticity from JSA Authentication Services dated April 14, 2016 as well as a copy of a Letter of Authenticity from Sig Auctions (Phoenix, Arizona.)

Ex-President Hoover, who would celebrate his 60th birthday on August 10, 1934, wrote this letter of thanks to "Master Paul Gordon," a young boy from Clarksburg, West Virginia. "And this gives me the opportunity to extend my good wishes to you on your tenth birthday," Hoover wrote in part.

Dr. Paul Edwin Gordon (1924-2012) is an excellent candidate for being Hoover's 9-year-old correspondent. Paul was from Clarksburg, West Virginia and was born on August 10, 1924, making him 10 years old in August 1934.

Hoover wrote from his West Coast headquarters at Stanford University. Hoover had been one of the first undergraduates of Stanford University; he received his Bachelor of Science degree there in 1895. In 1919, after concluding food relief and other charity work in Europe, Hoover donated $50,000 to his alma mater to house an enormous collection of World War I-related archives and artifacts. The Hoover War Collection (renamed the Hoover War Library in 1922 and the Hoover Institute and Library on War, Revolution and Peace in 1946) still exists today. Hoover remained a steadfast donor and fundraiser of the library until his death.

Herbert Hoover served as president between 1929-1933.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
