Description
Central Asia, Tibet, ca. early to mid- 20th century CE. A two-headed drum, known as a damaru (damru), made from wood with stretched skin painted green. The panels of hanging cloth form a handle and the decorative tassel that is worn with age and use. The damaru drum is used in both Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism, and in the former it is used in tantric practices as just one of the sacred implements that form their rituals. Size: 9.5" Diameter x 4.5" H (24.1 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii collection, acquired 2000 to 2010

Condition
Warping to skin drum surface, but intact. Losses and fading to green pigment as expected with age and use. Fraying and tears to the cotton textiles, staining and discoloration. Overall good used condition.
