Item Details
Description
Carved Sailor's Wooden Box Commemorating the Battle of Mobile Bay. 3 1/4 x 3/4 inches, 1 3/4 inches high.

Small rectangular oak box hand carved and incised by Lt. Commander Louis Ashfield Kimberly of the USS Hartford commemorating the fight with the Rebel ironclad CSS Tennessee. Affixed to the inside of the raised lid is an old inked piece of paper that reads, "From one of the Timbers of the Hartford/a splinter torn by 100 Pdr/shell - fired by 'Tennessee'./August 5th 1864/Battle of Mobile Bay." Inlaid into the top of the hinged lid is an oval ivory panel with a scrimshaw rendering of the Hartford taking on fire from the Tennessee at close quarters. Both fighting ships display their respective colorized battle flags amidst the chaos of the battle. The panel is secured by six small metal stars with another six-pointed star in place of the key port. Captivating scene made all the more meaningful given that carver was was an eyewitness to the battle.

Impressive relic and original piece of folk art that descended in the family of Kimberly before it was consigned to auction in the early 2000s.
