Description
A Dramatic carved wooden mask accented with blue and white kaolin clay pigments, with an encrusted surface. Kagle masks are "troublemakers", meant to disturb village festivities with their erratic movements and aggressive behavior. Intended to symbolize the brutal force of the bush and of savage, nonhuman creatures, the "troublemaker" is in fact a test of the solidity of social institutions. Its disruptive performance serves a social function by teaching the value of order and discipline through its negative example. Dan / Kran peoples, Liberia / Ivory Coast, West Africa. The mask measures 11 x 8 inches ( 16.5 inches tall on professional custom display stand which is included. Provenance: Franco Giovanni Scanzi collection, Italy / Ivory Coast.
