Description
18/19th century mask of Onnamen. Comes with silk pouch.Per Stephen Marvin, Onnamen: It is patterned after young-woman masks of Noh, but the features do not correspond to any specific type. For a Kagura mask, the carving of the obverse is quite skillful, although not of the same quality as a typical Noh mask. On the other hand, the painting is poor--damaged portions may have been repainted by an amateur. The reverse exhibits the rhythmic chisel marks of a professional mask carver, and the ideographs "deme" (出目) are visible, which is the title used by artists affiliated to the House of Genkyū, House of Genri, and House of Ōno. The ideographs of the name following the title are illegible. I would guess that the artist was a lower ranked artist of the House of Genri or, possibly, Genkyū. Comes with silk pouch
