Description
Kagura Mask of Ebisu, 18/19th century.Per Stephen Marvin, this mask represents one of the gods of good fortune, which appears in both Kagura and KyÅgen. It is also well carved, but the features are too exaggerated, especially the teeth, for a KyÅgen mask, and the painting is substandard (also quite possibly repainted by an amateur). The label on the reverse reads (from the left column to right), Ebisu, Tenka-ichi YÅ«kan, Number 37 (inventory notation). Active in the first half of the 17th century. YÅ«kan was the second head of the House of House of ÅŒno. He did not make this mask. Most of his work is signed with a cartouche, and he carved the reverse in a very distinctive style, which is not evident. Attributing masks (erroneously or falsely) to earlier master carvers is very common. Nonetheless, it is a Kagura mask of superior quality, probably dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, the same period as the Onnamen.
