Description
Abstract portrait entitled "Witch Doctor", made, according to the artist's note on the back, "after smaller sketch of F. Vonn, pianist." Signed lower right Wm. H. Littlefield and dated August 30, 1951. Frame, 15 3/4" x 19 1/2". Sight, 9" x 13 1/4". Massachusetts artist William Horace Littlefield (1902-1969) studied art in Boston before and while attending Harvard. After graduation he spent four years in Paris, where he shared a studio with Stanley William Hayter. Returning to New England, Littlefield participated in the First Biennial at the Whitney Museum in 1932 and was included in a 1936 exhibition at MOMA. In 1947 he co-founded the Cape Cod Art Association and first exhibited at the Provincetown Art Association (PAAM) in 1949. In 1951, he began study with Morris Davidson and in 1952 with Hans Hofmann, turning his work toward Abstract Expressionism. Littlefield continued to exhibit until his death in 1969.
