Pair of WWII Signed Books by Flying Aces Mike Kawato & Pappy Boyington

A pair of signed books signed by two World War II fighter pilots. The first is "Bye Bye Black Sheep" by Masajiro "Mike" Kawato. Phoenix: Association Lithographers, 1978. Special abridged edition, fifth printing. Octavo, 172pp. Inscribed and signed in English and Japanese on the front free end page, "May 18, 1986 To: Gerry & Rob…Best Wishes…Mike Kawato." With photographs, maps, etc. throughout. Navy leather bound boards with the original dust jacket. The second book is "Baa Baa Black Sheep" by Pappy Boyington. USA: Col. Gregory Boyington, 1958. Octavo, 384pp. Inscribed and signed on the front free end page, "May 18, 1986 - To Gerry & Rob With Warmest Regards - Pappy Boyington." Dark green leather bound boards with the original dust jacket. Both books have light wear to the dustjackets. Sound binding. Boldly signed, very fine overall.

Japanese airman Masajiro “Mike” Kawato is credited with shooting down Marine Corps flying ace, Gregory “Pappy” Boyington on January 3, 1944. Boyington was a Congressional Medal of Honor winner, known as the "bad boy" of the Pacific theater. He was put in command of the famous Black Sheep squadron in 1943. Years later, when Kawato moved to the United States, he met “Pappy” Boyington and the two men became friends.
