Japanese airman Masajiro “Mike” Kawato is credited with shooting down Marine Corps flying ace, Gregory “Pappy” Boyington on January 3, 1944. Boyington was a Congressional Medal of Honor winner, known as the "bad boy" of the Pacific theater. He was put in command of the famous Black Sheep squadron in 1943. Years later, when Kawato moved to the United States, he met “Pappy” Boyington and the two men became friends.
