Joshua Chamberlain Signed Stock Certificate as Company President

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain signed stock certificate, 1p, measuring 11.5" x 9.375", incorporated in the state of New Jersey, dated January 18, 1892. Partially printed document signed "Joshua L. Chamberlain" as President and countersigned by Treasurer J.N. Huston. No. 72, issuing 100 shares ($10 each) of the Ocala and Silver Springs Company to William D. Black. With a blind embossed seal at the lower left corner. The certificate has been stamped and has transfer information signed by Black on verso. With flattened folds, light wear, and soiling at the edges. Boldly signed.

Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain (1828-1914) and his 20th Maine Volunteers successfully defended Little Round Top at Gettysburg against a sustained and organized Confederate assault, earning him the Medal of Honor, the adoration of the Northern public, and the grudging respect of his foes. Twice wounded in later battles, Chamberlain, a major general at the end of the war, presided over the surrender ceremony on April 12, 1865, at Appomattox Courthouse. His wartime popularity propelled him to four terms as Maine's governor, and although primarily an academic, he engaged in several business ventures, including one as president of the Ocala and Silver Springs Company, a Florida railroad and improvement company. However, the venture, like many others, proved unsuccessful for him.
