Rare Stock Certificate Signed by Francis M. Drexel
DREXEL, FRANCIS. Partially Printed Document Signed, “Francis M. Drexel”, as president, 1 p., December 10, 1856, New York, 9" x 8", being a stock certificate entitling “J. W. Harrison” to “One” Share of the Capital Stock of the American Marine Governor Manufacturing Co. Ink erosion affecting most of Drexel’s signature, although still legible. A lovely example of a very rare certificate signed by the Drexel patriarch.
Francis Martin Drexel (1792-1863) was born Franz Martin Drexel in Dornbirn, Austria. A banker and a painter, he was the father of Anthony Joseph Drexel (founder of Drexel University) and the grandfather of Saint Katherine Drexel. He escaped Napoleonic forces and spent eight years working and studying painting in five countries before arriving in the United States, where he started the Philadelphia branch of the Drexel family. The Drexel family was one of the wealthiest and most prominent of their time.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
