DESCRIPTION: Biblia, Das Ist die Heilige Schrift. Printed in Germantown, Pennsylvania by Christoph Saur. 1763. 992 and 277 pages. Full leather hardcover with clasps. MEASUREMENTS: 10-3/8" high x 8-1/4" quarto. Saur (1695-1758) was the first German-language printer in the North American colonies, settling in Germantown, north of downtown Philadelphia. A first edition of this bible was printed in 1743, being the first bible printed in the colonies besides Eliot's 1661 Indian bible. His son, Christoph Saur, Jr., would print this 1763 edition after his father's death, with this version being the first bible to ever be printed on American-made paper. CONDITION: Leather split between front board and spine. Loss of top clasp. Text block remains sturdy and bound well. Loss of any potential end pages prior to title page. Small inscription on front pastedown. Bumping and rubbing to edges and corners. Occasional edge wear to pages. Toning and occasional foxing to pages as expected with age.
