Description
A James II sterling silver twin handled covered porringer, London 1688 by Benjamin Pyne Of rounded circular form upon a spreading circular foot with a lobed rim, the twin C scroll handles with applied ball and disc decoration. The pull off domed lid with an incised edge rising to a spirally fluted terrace surmounted by a vase form finial with lobed decoration and an inverted baluster knop. The body with half gently spiral fluing, engraved with an early 19th century impaled coat of arms within a C scroll cartouche reserved with foliage surmounted by a crest of griffin segregant. Fully marked to the right of handle and to the bezel of the lid. Length ā€“ 27.5 cm / 10.5 inches Weight ā€“ 1204 grams / 38.71 ozt The crest is for Sykes The arms are for Sykes impaling Lumsdaine for The Rev Edwin Sandys (1785-1871) of The Rectory, Upper Hardes and Blanerne House, Berwickshire who married on the14th November 1816 Mary Lilias Lumsdaine (1784-1864). Edwin was the second son of Edwin Humphrey Sandys of Northbourne, Kent (1750-1831) and his wife Helen Chick (1757-1833). Mary was the daughter and eventual heiress of William Lumsdaine of that Ilk and Blanerne in the County of Berwickshire and his wife, Ann Gordon. Upon Maryā€™s succession to the family estates of Lumsdaine, Blanerne and Innergellie on the death of her brother, William Lumsdaine of Rennyhill and Innergellie in the County of Fifeshire (1792-1830), Edwin adopted the surname of Lumsdaine in addition to that of Sandys becoming Edwin Sandys-Lumsdaine.
