Description
Western and central Mexico during the Spanish colonial era. c1611. By Jodocus Hondius. Amsterdam. From ‘Atlas Sive Cosmograhicae’ the famous Mercator-Hondius Atlas. Published by the great mapmaker Hondius after he had purchased the plates of Mercator’s maps from his heirs. Mercator, considered the greatest mapmaker of his age, passed away in 1594. Hondius updated and added his own material to make this Atlas. Map shows Mexico City which is surrounded by a lake, names a very large number of cities and Spanish settlements. A fictitious inland sea has islands in it and is said to be a location for salt extraction. Diamond shapes indicate the locations of silver and copper mines. Cannibals are said to reside in certain remote mountains. Three-strap work cartouches decorate the map, as well as a Spanish treasure galleon and a sea monster. 19 x 14”. Hand-colored, copperplate engraved. Excellent condition. Authenticity Guaranteed.
