Description
A middle Sepik River crocodile drum. East Sepik province, Iatmul people, Papua New Guinea.Of typical hourglass shape the handle in the form of a crocodile with scaly back and elongated face with reddened eyes. two large panels of stacked arcs possibly representing crocodile skin at either side, raised rib to the sides for attachment of fiber. Find patina with remains of infill pigment and modern paint, tympanum intact.This expressive drum comes from the middle Sepik River and depicts a crocodile, an important animal in mythology as well as an important totem animal in the region. A fine example.Acquired by Marc Seidler from Rudi Ceaser, C. 1981. Measures 22.75 x 6 inches.
