Description
A Nkuma Washkuk Double headed cult house decoration, Washkuk people, East Sepik province, Papua New Guinea. Of unusual form, the carving depicting two heads opposed to each other chin to chin, each with classical features such as high brow, pointed faces with deep concavities, the lower halves with red pigment; stylized arms between the two heads, fine old encrusted surface.Figural carvings of this type often adorned the Men’s cult houses among the Washkuk and were attached or leaned against the architectural beams. They would have had specific meanings Iconographically; in this case possibly representing the Hero-brothers of Washkuk mythology. Acquired by Marc Seidler from Lynda Cunningham, C. 1980. Measures 26.5 x 7 inches.
