Lot of five bone daggers, Abelam people, Maprik hills, East Sepik province, Papua New Guinea.5 old daggers with curvilinear designs in classical form, one with a full figure, the others with varying incised patterns typical of the region, fine old surface patinas.Bone daggers of this type are found in many parts of Papua New Guinea however the design elements on these point to an origin among the Abelam or related peoples. Made from the leg bone of the cassowary bird, these daggers were both utilitarian and sacred, often bearing important clan or totem symbols.Acquired by Marc Seidler from Lynda Cunningham, C. 1980. The largest is 15.75 inches long.
