Description
A rare Gogodala carrying bag. Gogodala people, Balimo Lagoon; lower Fly River, Western province, Papua New Guinea.Of typical form, the bag made of woven fiber and design elements painted onto the surface. The carrying bags and other woven objects of the Gogodala may resemble some of those of the Suki, which is not unexpected in that the Suki originally were part of the same proto-linguistic group as the Western Gogodala and in fact still speak a related language to them, in contrast to the Anim peoples who they are culturally more closely related to now. This type of bag is quite rare as traditional Gogodala culture virtually collapsed in the middle 20th Century.Acquired by Marc Seidler from George Craig, C. 1980; field collected by Craig prior to 1966. The bag measures 22.5 inches wide x 12 inches tall.
