Title: 1859. Important Western Transitional era United States by Colton

Date/Period: 1859

Materials: Steel engraved

Size: 17 1/2 x 14 1/2”

United States. A very unusual map where the map makers are attempting to show the rapidly changing circumstances of the western territories. Multiple territories are shown with two colors one roughly corresponding with current states but its name is printed across areas that would be lost soon after. Minnesota for example, the current state is in pink but the name extends over to the light blue western region. This happens again with Kansas where the current state boundaries are in green but the name extends to the pink area which would form a part of Colorado. Utah as well, although its eastern boundary would be shifted west to help form Colorado, the UTAH name extends towards California while the yellow is almost identical to current Nevada. Finally, New Mexico, which also extends to California in the west in blue while post-Gadsden purchase Arizona exists in the light pink color but is not labeled. Finally, a massive Nebraska territory exists as well as a large Washington territory extending to include current Idaho and parts of Montana. A most fascinating map. From before the civil war. By J.
