[SLAVERY & ABOLITION]. Manuscript bill of sale for an elderly enslaved man named Plenty, sold for 10 dollars. Charleston, [SC], 23 November 1855.
1 page, approx. 8 x 2 3/4 in., creased and wrinkled in spots, with discoloration throughout and wear to edges and corners. Undersigned.
Document records the sale of a man described as "an old Negro named Plenty," to William A. Fox for 10 dollars "without warranties except as to title..." Undersigned "John S. Ryan."
John S. Ryan was a known slave dealer and auctioneer in Charleston during the 19th century. His name is found on broadsides advertising the sale of enslaved persons as well as other documentation including Slave Schedules identifying him as an enslaver.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
