[AFRICAN AMERICANA -- SLAVERY & ABOLITION]. Legal document outlining the sale of 14 enslaved individuals featuring their names along with the names of their enslavers. New Orleans, 16 September 1826.
2 pages, 7 3/4 x 13 1/8 in., fully separated along horizontal crease to upper portion, with additional creases and significant wear and toning to edges and corners. Undersigned by John Holland as sheriff.
Manuscript header identifies the document as relating to a probate court case, "Jeanne Philippe Lafon vs. Jean Gravier & Jean Poumairat." The table below is titled, "Account sales of fourteen out of twenty two slaves seized in the above suit on the 19th June 1824." Table includes date of purchase, name of the enslaved individual, name of the purchaser, price, interest, and total price. The names of the enslaved include Bejotte, Bambara, Lamour, Tom, Congo Joli, Cecile, Tom Brown, Catiche, Tom, Jean Louis, Charles, Babet, Sophie, and Celeste. Beneath the table, charges are listed for various related expenses, including "Jail fees," "Doctor Ritt attending on Slaves," "Conducting 22 Slaves," and "Taking up Tom Brown."
