Heinrich Barth was a German explorer known for his voyages in Africa. In fact, many scholars believe Barth to be the greatest and most prominent German explorer of Africa much in part to his substantial surveys and published accounts of his voyages. Barth learned Arabic in preparation for his journey, a voyage which would last for six years ending in 1855. He explored Tunis and Tripoli, ruins in Egypt, encountered slavers and slave caravans, Sudan, Timbuktu, and many other places throughout Africa.



This 1859 edition of Barths voyage report contains impressive, full-page illustrations throughout, including a view of a herd of African elephants!
