Native American, southwestern United States, Four Corners region, southern Colorado Plateau, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), ca. 1125 to 1200 CE. An attractive redware pottery bowl of the Wingate black-on-red type boasting hypnotizing decoration of hachured and solid black interlocking motifs on the interior walls, surrounding an empty central tondo. The elaborate and extensive decoration of the interior is contrasted not only by the bareness of the exterior but also the minimalism of the vessel's overall form; displaying a hemispherical body with a round base and annular rim. The bowl was created using the coil-and-scrape method then slip painted with mineral based pigments and then fired in an oxidizing atmosphere to achieve a red ground.
