Description
Collection of four five-pointed brass G.A.R. or Grand Army of the Republic medals suspended from ribbons which are attached to bald eagles gripping a sword and scrolls. Three of the medals feature a ribbon in the colors of the American flag, the last with a golden ribbon. Two of the medals are numbered, commonly seen among earlier examples. The numbers are ‘17010’ and ‘BT2992’, inscribed with the dates May 4 to June 22, 1886 on the reverse of the eagles. Light, expected wear, with only one showing significant oxidation. Overall, very good. The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization comprised of Civil War Union Army veterans, founded in 1866. The organization reached its zenith in the 1880s, securing veteran pensions, assisting in the elections of presidents, fighting for racial equality, and even founding Memorial Day.
