Description
Swagger stick carried by an officer of the Coldstream Guards during World War I, 27 in. long with wooden shaft, metal tip, and bulbous top which bears in relief the emblem of Britain's Coldstream Guards, the oldest continuously serving regular[b] regiment in the British Army. The emblem is somewhat worn from use, as is the finish on the wood shaft, else very good. The Coldstream Guards were among the first British regiments to arrive in France after Britain declared war on Germany. In the following battles, it suffered heavy losses, in two cases losing all of its officers. At the First Battle of Ypres, the 1st battalion was virtually annihilated, down to 150 men and the Lt Quartermaster. The regiment fought at Mons, Loos, the Somme, Ginchy, and in the 3rd Battle of Ypres.
