Description
British War Office 1:500,000 scale air map of Munich and the surrounding area, 28 x 24 in., originally compiled and drafted at the War Office in 1940, this second edition dated 1942. This perticular map bears several marginal notations in different hands: 'OPERATIONS 24/25TH APRIL/44...(S GRP) 9 SRN...RAF BARDNEY 2100 hrs T/O 6 A/C...LEAD A/C S/L B. GILMOUR'. Folds, some soiling and marginal wear. Markings lead us to believe that this map was used for planning or reviewing the mission. Also included bomb release trigger and plug-in cord, marked 'A M REF. No. 5D/596' This bomb release would have been used on an Avro Lancaster bomber. April 24, 1944, 234 Lancasters and 16 Mosquito aircraft from the RAF attacked Munich. It was a devastating and concentrated attack, and around 80% of the buildings in the target area were destroyed. The attack was noted for a new method of target marking at low level from 700 feet.
