Schweizer Privatsammlung. In Ghana erworben (1993).
Der Begriff Gurunsi bezeichnet keine einzelne Volksgruppe, sondern wurde zum Sammelbegriff für eine Reihe von Ethnien (im wesentlichen die Nuna, Nunuma, Léla, Winiama, Sisala und die Kaséna), welche im südlichen Burkina Faso und an der Grenze von Ghana sesshaft sind und von der Agrarwirtschaft, dem Fischfang und der Jagd leben.
Die markanten monoxylen "simma" und auch "sigma" genannten Stirnmasken der Gurunsi, haben die Kunstsammler besonders beeindruckt. Diese abstrakten und meist monoxylen Masken mit polychrom gefasstem geometrischem Ritzdekor sind bemerkenswert.
Dargestellt sind in Form von realen oder imaginären Tieren vor allem Buschgeister, die über eine Familie, einen Klan oder die ganze Gemeinschaft wachen und Fruchtbarkeit, Gesundheit sowie Wohlstand gewährleisten.
