Description
1855 Religious Emblems Allegories Engravings Great Awakening Christian Symbolism
“Religious Emblems” bound with “Religious Allegories” by William Holmes and John Warner Barber are two collections of emblematic engravings accompanied by written explanations, observations, and religious reflections, aimed at illustrating divine truth based on the cardinal principles of Christianity. Due to popular demand, “Religious Allegories” was compiled and published two years after “Religious Emblems.” Across both works there are total of 75 woodcut engravings by John Warner Barber.
According to the authors, they have created these illustrations in a manner that avoids heathen mythology and adheres to Christian principles. These visual representations have a dual advantage of speaking not only to the mind but also to the eye in a universally intelligible language. The book employs pictorial representations to convey instruction on important subjects related to Christianity, with the authors intention being an emphasis on the power of visuals to create lasting impressions on the soul.
