1627 Emblems Pia Desideria Emblemata Illustrated Pope Urban VIII Herman Hugo
“The most popular religious emblem book of the 17th-century!”
Herman Hugo was a 17th-century Jesuit who is chiefly remembered for his work ‘Pia Desideria’. This work was a spiritual emblem book and was regularly considered “the most popular emblem book of the 17th-century.” (Daly, p.109). This highly rare and desirable work features 45 engravings of Boethius van Bolswert, a renowned engraver. ‘Pia Desideria’ illustrates the spiritual path to salvation and offers meditative verses for love and prayer by Hugo and prominent Church Fathers.
