Papinius Statius was a 1st-century Roman poet remembered for his epic poems Thebaid, Silvae and Achilleid. These works tell famous stories of mythology and iconic heroes – namely Oedipus and Achilles. These poems were known to have had significant influence on Juvenal as well as into the 12th-century on Chaucer, Dante, and Boccaccio as well as Dryden and Grotius in the Renaissance.
This 1630 first and only Jansson edition was published in Amsterdam and features an engraved title page.
