**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, South Coast of Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 200 to 500 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery drinking vessel known as a kero (also quero) with a band of colorful trophy heads encircling the base. Above the severed heads are repeating vertical bars in black and red pigment, perhaps signifying the hair by which the heads were traditionally suspended. Size: 3.55" W x 5.125" H (9 cm x 13 cm)
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private I.L. collection, Mt. Vernon, New York, USA, acquired 1970s to 1980s

Condition
Minor abrasions and scattered spalls, with touch-up pigment present on the faces of some trophy heads, light craquelure to scattered areas of original pigment, and small chips along rim, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to original motifs. Previous inventory label beneath base.
