Description
Technique: Pencil on Paper
Date: c. 1840
Description: Sketch or figure and costume study for a history painting in the style of the German late Romanticism or the Nazarenes. Showing a standing figure in wrinkled antique garment, pointing with a firm gesture to an open book. On the reverse side there is a portrait study of an Italian-looking lady, sketched quickly and with few strokes. The sheet comes from a sketchbook by an anonymous artist from the circle of the famous history painter Moritz von Schwind (1804 Vienna - 1871 Niederpöcking), who is one of the most important painters of the German late Romantic period. As in Schwind's works, the sketchbook contains numerous depictions of history scenes or illustrations of fairy tales and legends as well as religious themes.
