Description
**First Time At Auction**
Native American / First Nations, United States, Alaska or Canada, Inuit, ca. mid-20th C. A marvelous whalebone sculpture of the head and gaping maw of a polar bear. The artist used the natural anatomy and some minimal carving of mouth, eyes, and nostrils, drilling 4 sockets for the fangs- which are carved from a less porous bone or perhaps deer antler. Whale bone sculpture requires the use of older bone that has dried and ossified - new bone will splinter and be too oily to carve- hence the wonderfully aged and weathered appearance of these works. Animals, such as this polar bear, were vital Indigenous people's survival, and were often represented in sculptural works such as this - bone being more readily available to the Arctic region than wood. Size: 12" L x 13" W x 8.5" H (30.5 cm x 33 cm x 21.6 cm)
Provenance: private Greenwood Village, Colorado, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
