Description
**Originally Listed At $1200**
Southeast Asia, Northeastern Thailand, Ban Chiang culture, ca. 300 BCE to 200 CE. A superb hand-built earthenware vessel resting on a flared foot with a mesmerizing, patterned surface painted in a cream slip and red-orange scrolling motifs with abstract human figures around the body. This balanced profile is exceptionally beautiful, and this sizable piece is all the more impressive because it was molded by hand without the use of a potter's wheel! Earthenware vessels such as this played an important part in funerary burials - the deceased was buried at full length reclining position with pottery placed at the head and feet, these vessels were probably filled with food and tools for the afterlife. The painted surface and pedestal base indicates this piece was made during the Late Period. Size: 7.5" Diameter x 11.75" H (19 cm x 29.8 cm)
Provenance: private Arlington, Texas, USA collection, acquired mid to late-1960s
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
