Description
Ca. 200-400 AD. An iron spatha sword blade, a magnificent weapon of ancient times that embodies both form and function. With a length ranging from 75 to 100 centimeters, the spatha's design was influenced by the Celtic long sword, and it served as the primary weapon of the Roman cavalry and infantry from the 1st to the 3rd century AD. Crafted with precision and care by skilled blacksmiths, the spatha's blade is made from high-quality iron, tempered and hardened to achieve a razor-sharp edge. Its shape is elongated and tapered, with a double-edged blade. Roman iron swords like the spatha were not only a formidable weapon of war but also a symbol of power and prestige. The Roman army relied on these weapons to maintain their military superiority and expand their empire across Europe and beyond. Size: L:790mm / W:40mm ; 640gProvenance: Property of a Central London gallery; ex. European collection; formerly G. Hook collection, UK, 1970s.
