Description
Daunian Subgeometric II, ca. 550-400 B.C..Clay, cream coating, dark brown and red matt glaze. H. 25 cmAn olla with a squat body standing on a small, round base. Shoulder with two short arched handles on opposite sides with a stylized animal head protome between them on each side. Hanging semicircles adorn the inside of the flared mouth and below them three concentric stripes define the narrow opening. On the shoulder a metope frieze framed at top and bottom by thick stripes and encircling coloured bands. The reserved metopes are ornamented with finely drawn vertical and horizontal lines, some of them broken. Two triangles hang down towards the base. Reassembled from large fragments; minor lacunae on the body and funnel restored and retouched. Interior of funnel, one protome, one handle and the wall of the vessel slightly worn. Glaze slightly abraded. Bichrome ware.Formerly Coll. W. Rosenbaum, Ascona, before 1984.
