Description
Kiho Kawamura, 1778-1852, student and adopted son of Bumpo; KIHO GAFU, "Kiho's Picture Book" (Kyoto: Yoshida Shimbei, circa 1827) 10 1/8 x 6 7/8 in., in traditional Japanese fukurotoji binding: gray-blue cover with printed wave pattern in mica, worn original title label; with modern chitsu folding case. Contains 30 double page images, most printed in light polychrome.
Provenance: From the Estate of Lionel Katzoff (1936-2022) longtime Baltimore resident and collector of Japanese art. Mr. Katzoff's collection of hand-printed Japanese books was the subject of an exhibition, "Gathering Jewels," at the Walters Art Museum in 2004. Proceeds from the sale will go to the Walters.
