Description
John James Audubon (American, 1785-1851) "Rusty Grakle," plate 222 from the "Birds of America" Bien Edition, New York 1858-1860, chromolithograph with hand coloring on double elephant folio sheets. The image depicts four birds perched on branches eating berries. This edition was reissued by the artist's son J.W. Audubon, with chromolithographs of J.J. Audubon's original drawings produced through a collaboration with lithographer Julius Bien (American, 1826-1909) and was published by Roe Lockwood & Son, NY in 1860. Notations below image: "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S. F.L.S." lower left, title/description: "Rusty Grakle..." lower center and "Chromolithy by J. Bien, 1860" lower right, and "No. 7-4" upper left. It is believed that only approximately 70 folios were completed as the US Civil War halted this production. Provenance: Phyllis Lucas Gallery, NYC. [Sheet: 39 1/2" H x 26 1/2" W]. Marks, smudges and toning, tears and losses at the edges.
