Description
Walter Feldman (1927-2017). "Attic Spaces", 1949. Oil on linen. Signed and dated, lower left. Dimensions: 27 1/2" x 40". Unframed. Audiences are immediately drawn to Feldman’s use of bold colors and the simplicity of his forms in this painting. As Modernist ideas and progressive art thoughts became the fabric of Feldman's daily life, he experimented with Sheeler’s precisionist style. Precisionism, an American style of painting that emerged in the 1920s and '30s was the style that stresses a simplistic geometric design. While Feldman quickly abandoned this style, most likely a Yale art class assignment, his excellent sense of color is evident and continues to be a strong component of all of his paintings. Most unusual is the heavy application of paint – a thick application of paint he rarely used in his career.
