Description
"The Open Door", 1947. Oil on board. SLR & dated. Dimensions: 11" x 14". Housed in original frame, under glass. Feldman, a decorated WWII veteran, returned to Yale in 1947 to continue his art education. The first-hand witnessing of the Holocaust camps personally challenged Feldman and his Jewish heritage. How could a God who had established a covenant with the Jewish people allow such a genocide of such magnitude to take place? While the post war-art world would lead him into modernist ideas, this realist painting is such a provocative testimony to his personal reflection on his Jewish identity. The image of a Jew praying at home, the Menorah on the table, the oldest symbol of the Jewish people, and the empty antique chair. The viewer is able to interpret various meanings from this painting but clearly Feldman is wrestling with his own post-WWII identity & ideology.
