Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, North Sumatra, Batak culture, mid-20th century CE. An elaborate hand-carved ceremonial altar or ritualistic carving supported by squatting figures with coiffures made from coarse boar hairs wrapped in cloth and cords. The 4 figures are nude, alternating between male and female, they crouch on an integral circular plinth with their arms upraised to grasp the base of the pedestal that supports a removable domed lid that fits into a central socket, and atop this is a mythical singa beast and a human rider. This "lid" can be taken off to reveal a flat surface with the socket cavity - perhaps an area to prepare ritualistic offerings or medicine. Size: 11.5" Diameter x 26" H (29.2 cm x 66 cm)
